It's not every day when the well-known Catholic writers Michael Flynn and John C. Wright get together to talk Catholicism and Science Fiction. The Wonderful World of Star Wars

I'm a little late to the news about Disney buying Lucasfilm and planning to make more Star Wars sequels (HT: Jeffrey Overstreet). Many thoughts flood my mind, some good, some bad, and others downright horrifying. Questions pop out at me. I wonder where exactly the screenwriters will draw their stories for Episodes 7, 8, and 9. Will Luke, Leia, and Han return with new actors? Will the new movies supersede the expanded universe stuff (Leia and Han marrying and having kids, Luke opening a Jedi academy, the Thrawn Trilogy)? As the B-Movie Cathechist mentions, movie canon always takes precedence. But hey, maybe Chewie won't have to meet such a lame end (a moon crushes him in the comics). I wouldn’t mind that bit of jossing.

Of course, I'd preferred a reboot of the prequels with better writers, but what can you do?

A Star Trek Film by Any Other Name....

Space, the final frontier. These are the voyages of the starship Enterprise. Its mission: to explore strange new worlds, to seek out new life and new civilizations, to boldly go where no man has gone before... except maybe 11 times (the 6 films with the original series cast, the 4 Next Generation films, and the reboot).

According to Jeffrey Overstreet, the next Star Trek film will go by the name Star Trek Into Darkness, making it the first Trek film without a subtitle or Roman numeral.

A Link to the Past: Steam Punk, Anime, and Sci Fi

Just a few interesting web comics, sci fi books, and anime shows catching my attention recently...

First up, I point you to the Girl Genius web comic. Brandon's recommended this steam punk graphic novel a few times and DGD even wrote a gushing review. I've only read through the first volume, but so far I'm intrigued enough to make it through all twelve!

Next up, DGD suggested to me the show Trigun, a western-themed anime about the pacifist gunslinger Vash the Stampede, the "Human Typhoon" with a 60,000,000,000$$ (you read that right, double dollars!) bounty on his head! The first season is available here on the FuNimation Youtube page.

Lastly, I'm nearly finished with Walter M. Miller Jr.'s post-apocalyptic Sci Fi novel A Canticle for Leibowitz about an order of monks who preserve scientific knowledge after the "Great Deluge." Brandon praised it as "one of the most exquisitely written science fiction novels you will ever read." I'm not inclined to disagree, very highly recommended, especially for my fellow Thomist readers!
